From Beth Pyles - beth.pyles@gmail.com
This article and abstract were sent to me by a member of MPT (Muslim Peacemaker Teams), a peace group and sister organization of CPT in Iraq.  I was particularly struck as the in-country population of women studied live in Karada in Baghdad, the neighborhood where I lived while with CPT in Baghdad.  It is (or was) a mixed neighborhood of Shi'a, Christian, and Sunni.

Most of the Christians have left and many of the people remaining, Muslim and Christian, have disappeared or descended into fear and poverty.  This focus on the women highlights the importance of work by women like Hanna Edwar of Al-Amal, a women's human rights Iraqi group in Baghdad (last I heard).

The irony that the practical and legal rights of women were greater under Saddam than under the current government is a heartbreakingly cruel reality of the waging of war -- the interests of those perceived to be in the minority in terms of power are often sacrificed or put on hold as 'larger' interests are pursued (witness our own 'treaties' with drug-dealing war lords in Afghanistan).  So it is with the women of Iraq, whose losses are mostly experienced in silence.

The BRussells Tribunal wants to present a new important survey it has published: Deterioration of Women's rights and Living Conditions Under Occupation, written by Iraqi scientist Dr. Souad N. Al-Azzawi, specialist on the subject of depleted uranium and member of our Advisory Committee: READ MORE HERE >>
